Rhodri Owen introduces us to a new feature on X-Ray tonight, One Street, One Goal - in which residents from a street in Abertillery attempt to kick-start their 2010 by ditching the cigarettes, ready meals and alcohol and change their lives for the better.

In one of the poorest and unhealthiest parts of Wales, the neighbours of Portland Street aim to become fitter, healthier and more active and with the help of each other - and some experts provided by the X-Ray team.

Dr Tina Alwyn, from UWIC University in Cardiff, has these suggestions for improving the street's overall wellbeing:

  • Think about making small, achievable changes.
  • Exercise in moderation can reduce the likelihood of becoming ill and can prevent mild depression.
  • Join clubs and social groups or just get together with your neighbours and go walking.
  • If you're a parent, you can set your children off on the rightÌýpathway by healthy eating and getting out with them as much as possible. Walking, swimming and cycling are all activities you can try together that don't cost a lot of money.

If you are changing your diet and exercising, that's going to make a big impact on how you feel about yourself and improve your confidence.

Two of the mums from the street talk about their problems with feeding their families. Watch a clip.

And if you have any tips for the street to get them on the road to being fit and healthy, let us know below.

Watch tonight at 7.30pm on ±«Óãtv One Wales. And if you have story that you'd like the X-Ray team to investigate, find out how to contact us.
