Sven hits back in Rooney row

LONDON - Update from my earlier post regarding Manchester United possibly having a say in Wayne Rooney's participation..
at his 11am (BST) media conference.

In one of his most outspoken moments so far, Eriksson stated categorically: "Wayne Rooney is injury free. It's up to us to get him match fit now."
He said he was prepared to "take in any specialist we want to take in, or Manchester United want us to take in", but insisted that "the last say on this situation is Rooney's and mine".

In words uncharacteristically passionate, Sven signed off: "I am doing this in the best interests of Rooney, the England team and 40m England fans."

It's about time Sven showed some backbone!

Then again, he doesn't actually have to go back to england and face the wrath of Alex Ferguson after the world cup anymore does he? He can go into hiding in a small shack in the swedish hills.

Oh well - injury free sounds good to me. Get the lad fit!

Does anyone think there's any truth in the rumour that Rooney's injury was exagerated to serve some mind-game purpose of Sven and the england camp?

whatever, the positive feelings are starting to flow freely now all across the nation...

maybe, just maybe...

Sven clearly is not interested in the long term interests of Wayne...
All his decisions seem to be made with a view towards going out with a bang!

As a Manchester United fan, when this world cup campaign is over and you have all gone back to supporting your clubs, will those 40 million England fans Eriksson is so happy to refer to, care if Manchester United have go go into next season without our best player? NO! I thought not! What do we do under those circumstances if Rooneys injury is aggravated servicing the hopes of those who will call him a fat ugly Shrek when he next pulls on the shirt of the club who pays his wages.

Two important things here.

No way would Man U given the green light if Rooney was not %100. I don't think Manchester United or Sir Alex have anything to worry about.

Secondly, and more imortantly who are the other 10m people in England supporting?

Reading not too far between the lines, if the stories are true and Man U's lawyers were present with the doctors yesterday, it's pretty clear what's going to happen if Rooney is injured because he's brought out too early. Given the amount of money sloshing around the World Cup, it wouldn't surprise me if Nike were underwriting the FA's liability just to get their World Cup marketing value out of Rooney..... (let's face it - the face alone ain't going to shift much gear...)

The question is what would Man U fans prefer? For England to win the world cup and have a injured Rooney at the end, or to go out in the quarters again and then watch Rooney and Man U come 2nd or 3rd in the Premiership again?

Well if Rooney is really perfectly injury free, this is good news for England and fans. But if this risks Wayne Rooney's long term career, who is responsible for it. Eriksson will be gone after the world cup. Who's going to take that responsibilty.

Why is Jermaine Defoe going home rather than Jermaine Jenas? Argentina, France, Italy, Holland, and Germany each have 6 strikers. (Brazil have 5 but that includes Ronaldo and Ronaldhino!). We have only four and two of them are recovering from injury while one has never played a top class game.

i think jenas can change a game late on, or in extra time with his pace and marauding dribbling skill, Hargreaves however, serves no purpose, he's not as good a right back as Neville or Carragher, and he's not a good a holding midfielder as Carrick or Carragher, we need 5 strikers, at the moment we have 2, as Rooney is injured, and Walcott has never played in the top flight. Defoe would be the perfect man to have on the bench, as cover for Owen if he gets injured, which unfortnately we all know is very possible!!!!!

In response to the question posted on post number 13 by Englandfan, the answer is we would prefer to have Rooney at home ready for the start of the premiershipe season. This is irrespective of where we are going to finish in the league! This rather than see his career threatened by being rushed back too early, again I say it, to satisfy the lust for glory of those who will abuse him when he next visits their stadium.

In response to number 16. This is a very astute point that you make, why on earth we dont include defoe is beyond me. I really hope Walcott performs on the big stage, but no one can deny that he is unproven at the top level. Mind you we said this about Owen in 1998 and what a goal against Argentina. My feeling is we should drop Hargreaves and bring Defoe in. We need the extra stiker especially with injury concerns and to change a game should we need it.
