Intense in tents

Chris Edwards Chris Edwards | 10:19 UK time, Thursday, 29 May 2008

Kate was not happy with the midges - but none of us were. Kate was not happy that we took so long to see some animals - but none of us were. Kate was not happy camping - but she wasn't alone. I loved the camping :0)

Kate moved into her car and listened to the world service instead of camping in the tent. But this time she just did it - no fuss. A NEW KATE!

The title to this blog is therefore a bit of a fib - but it reflects what I thought would happen. I worried that a wet day's camping would be too much for Kate and possibly a few others.

I'm so happy for Kate - it's great that before the filming is over she suddenly appears to be making the most of the oppourtunity and is starting to smile, even in the bad bits :0)

PS. Mrs Kate makes exceedingly good cakes :0)

When we arrived at the campsite some of our group were lost and late - Abul & Lloyd (1hr +)

We all knew we would be made to look silly attempting to put up tents - AND WE DID :0)

Off to the forest to see deer. This went down well with all and was loved by our new team members - millions & millions of midges. As we waited for the off, it was feeding time and all of us were on the menu.

NB. Never felt so uncomfortable for years - I do not appreciate the beauty of the midge ;0)

Off we went in teams. I was in team Iolo with Kate and Abul in the second car. We were soon out of the cars looking for deer our expert had spotted earlier, but apart from a tiny white blob on the thermal image camera, I saw nothing.

Back to the cars - next up our expert (Iori Jones, wildlife conservation ranger) spots a fox in a field. Some of his weird and magnificent calls hold the fox's attention.

Then we somehow get split up and wander off Blair Witch-style - seeking the eye flash of anything. This was fun, but all we discovered were a few very loud owls - which could have been miles away - for all we knew :0)

Reunited, we see another fox. I tried to get shots with infa-red. I'm so good at getting things out of focus, if only that was the objective :0(

Then I stepped badly on a rock - hurt foot - spent couple of minutes laid out in the field - pain quickly died away. Looking up, I saw stars - millions of 'em. Real darkness
helps you see why we have so many different series of Dr Who - so many different planets - so much time :0)
