Dylan Thomas Festival 2009

The 12th Dylan Thomas Festival kicks off today, a day before the 95th anniversary of the birth of perhaps Wales' best-known writer.

The annual event is held around the dates of his birth and death (27 October and 9 November) in his birthplace Swansea. This year's festival will also celebrate the life of Aeronwy Thomas Ellis, Dylan Thomas' only daughter who sadly .

During these two weeks each year, the Dylan Thomas Centre and other venues across Swansea Bay present various literary events, lectures, plays, exhibitions, films and musical performances, and visitors can expect to see an array of celebrity guests and renowned authors.

The 2009 event is set to include many high profile names from the Welsh literary world. Award-winning author Dannie Abse and Peter Finch are lined-up to kick off the event this evening while Dylan's birth date is set to be marked by a concert featuring ex-Catatonia songstress Cerys Matthews.

Other highlights of the 2009 festival include a bilingual evening of poetry and song with award-winning writers Owen Sheers and Fflur Dafydd and a production of On the Edge, a new play by Gwynne Edwards on Pontrhydyfen's most famous export Richard Burton in the 25th anniversary year of his death.

The Dylan Thomas Fringe Festival will also run alongside the main event. Established in 2005, the entertainment-based Fringe Festival endeavours to showcase the best in up and coming talent in the performing arts from Swansea and south west Wales.
