Barbados ups the pace

Martin Gough | 19:29 UK time, Wednesday, 11 April 2007

Martin GoughBarbados - After a brief visit for warm-up games, the arrival of the Cricket World Cup proper in Barbados brought an instant change in tempo.

“What’s the pitch playing like?” asked – who scored a Test century on his last visit to in 1990 – as he popped into the press box a few overs in.

He could answer his own question - “Whoa! It’s bouncy” - as a surprised Tamin Iqbal gloved Sajid Mahmood’s fiery third delivery high to point.

The Caribbean, once famed as a fast-bowler’s paradise had until now given us wickets more often seen in the Asian subcontinent – slow, low and plain hard work for players and fans.

At last, in the home of , and , pace merchants could take centre stage.

England cricket fansMahmood and James Anderson are not up with those Caribbean legends but, after a month of impressing without being able to make an impression, they were able to reap some reward.

Bangladesh, who found their perfect pitch in Guyana to upset South Africa, were less able to handle deliveries whizzing past their noses at 85mph.

The atmosphere at “The Mecca” has also provided a refreshing change as its bowl structure magnifies the noise from the stands.

The same problem of unsold seats remains here as at every venue so far. All tickets available to the general public were sold out in January but returns from sponsors and tour operators meant the rebuilt stadium is probably at no more than two-third of its 28,000 capacity.

Still, England fans are out in force, especially in the party stands, where they took advantage of the temporary seating to make even more noise than normal.

There are plenty of Aussie fans keen to have a look at the place before Wednesday’s meeting with Ireland, and Indian fans have travelled from all over the world despite Bangladesh taking their side’s place in the Super 8.

Still no sign of my luggage – hopefully it will be waiting at my hotel when I get back - but the Barbados tourist board provided a polo shirt, which may get some heavy use otherwise.

I love cricket as much as anybody, but this tournament is waaaay too long.
Some teams play 2 or 3 matches within a few days and some teams wait 10 days between matches. It puts too much pressure on the team that has a cramped schedule of matches early on, because if they lose a couple, then they are in a hole before they have a chance to breathe.

I see no reason why 2 matches could not be played on the same day during the super eights.

I see that Matthew Hayden complained about the sandy beach like new ground in Antigua. Well, we can pin that on the ICC overseers (experts). They were the ones who insisted that the new grounds be layered with loam and sand..I guess the trade off is that you have better drainage as in Providence.

Hope you get your luggage soon.

I think with the Barbados pitch playing as it did yesterday the game between SA and England at this venue should be quite interesting. Surely a pitch that will suit the SA pace attack. Pollock and Ntini have been a bit ineffectual so far, but I think this pitch will suit them. I think even NZ could battle against the SA pace attack here, even though Shane Bond will get the same assistance....

I was lucky enough to be at Kensington yesterday....the new Oval looks & feels fabulous.

I just wanted to give credit to the Bangladesh team & the Indian supporters.
The Bangladeshis never gave up out there on the field & the Indian fans likewise in the stands.
The Indian guys were fantastic, a complete delight, they added so much to the atmosphere, they really came to party.

Unfortunately can't say the same for the England team, not quite sure what they came for.

Dear Guff,

Mahmood took 4 wickets against Sri Lanka (including their key batsman) and 3-27 and was MoM against Bangladesh.

He was poor against Aus but is still a promising young fast bowler learning his craft who deserves some encouragement.

You on the other hand seem to be a typically negative England 'fan'.
