Blog power

Hands up anyone who thinks blogging is a waste of time? Okay, put your hands down.

Hands up anyone who was invited to interview Bill Gates today? Ah, there are five people over there who have met the boss of Microsoft.

And who are they? Yes, they are bloggers.

Writers from , , and , together with , an ex-Microsoft employee and blogger extraordinaire, sat down with Bill Gates today to chew the fat ahead of his keynote tonight.

It's an indication of how influential bloggers are in the technology market. Microsoft is not stupid - it knows that these bloggers speak directly to a large community and are admired for their honesty, cynicism and knowledge of subject matter.

Are they all trained journalists? I don't know. Does it matter? Possibly.

One thing I do know is that the ±«Óãtv was not granted an audience with Bill Gates at CES this year. We will - hopefully - be speaking to him later this month when Vista launches globally to consumers.

So if you want to find out what they asked him and what he told them, keep an eye on the bloggers.

Hi Darren

Enjoying your CES coverage and great that you salute blogs, but very poor show that you don't mention or link to any British ones.

techdigest.tv and shinyshiny.tv are two of the most respected gadget blogs in the world. Both are based in London and between them attract nearly a million readers a month.

The two sites have already posted 100 stories and 15 videos from CES.

So come on how about some links from your tech blogs?

The most alarming aspect of Darren Waters entry is that he accepts the redefinition of "media" along purely corporate lines.

Microsoft invites cowering supplicants (and a former Microsoft marketing guy) to the Court of King Bill. And guess what? They're simply thrilled to be there!

Blogging ended up reinforcing the corporate domination of the media. The PR guys wind up their clockwork blogger PRs, and send them to cover a show - then revel in the positive coverage

Nick Carr has the best post on this - .

Come on ±«Óãtv, you can be more critical. We are your audience, not the "bloggers".

You say:

"these bloggers speak directly to a large community and are admired for their honesty, cynicism and knowledge of subject matter."

I say:

There is nothing admiral about cynicism. Scepticism, on the other hand, is aspirational, and should be encouraged in the wider world, not just amongst bloggers. Cynicism is the the lazy cousin of scepticism and should be booted out.

Hope this helps

J McC

P.S.
What about bloggers who don't keep up with the latest technology? Can we not garner some small degree of admiration for our own cutting edge contributions to society?
