The Queen at Croke Park
No, not in person; just in anthemic form. The Ireland - England match just kicked off at Croke Park. Mary McAleese, the Irish president, has just welcomed the players to the pitch; then came the national anthems. As expected, the atmosphere inside Croke Park is terrific: a real sense of history in the making. I've just seen Nicky Brennan, the GAA president, in the stands. He'll be live on Sunday Sequence tomorrow talking about the culture change the GAA is undergoing. Back to the game ...

The GAA in the South must be praised for moving forward in accommodating the mood of the country at large but sadly the same can’t be said about the GAA in the North who are still embracing the mood of republican entrenchment of the past.
When William and his guests talked about the playing of "the Queen" at Croke Park on Sunday Sequence this morning, they didn't mention that the British anthem is the anthem of the vast majority of the Ireland fans who travel south to support their team. It was refreshing that RTE brought out this aspect of the historic occasion, with both a comedy sketch and a more serious report on supporters travelling from Portadown RFC, before their coverage of the big game.
