The Courteeners - 'No You Didn't, No You Don't'
They say that whenever you point a finger at someone, you're also pointing three back at yourself (try it, it sort of works if you don't curl your fingertips into your palm too much), so any song which pokes fun at the silly ways of an un-named 'you' person can be safely assumed to be partly coming from a place of deep insecurity within the person who wrote it. And this song is a particularly fine example, as it's basically another of Liam Courteener's songs about how he is great and therefore 'you' are not.
(I'm fully aware, by the way, that writing down a series of opinions and feelings about music, some of which are less than flattering to the people who made the music in the first place, is the text equivalent of these sort of finger-pointing songs. The difference is, I make no claim to be fantastic in any empirical sense. That would be mad. It'd be like me saying "oh, yeah? You think you're so amazing, don't you, Snow Patrol? Well, look at me, I've got a BLOG! So, y'know...back off, yeah?")
Anyway, back to the close personal relationship between Liam Fray and his mirror...apparently some people make judgements about him and his gang because of their ripe language and the crazy things they used to get up to in a garage. And to be fair, why shouldn't he tell them all to go fish (as my old dad used to say)?
I mean, just look at him, he's not the kind of bloke you think he is, right? He's different. He may have the standard Mancunian indie man haircut, his songs might exist musically in the tissue-paper-thin gap between the View and the Libertines, and he might have to repeat bits of his lyrics because he forgot to write a second line as good as the first, but that doesn't mean he's not special, alright?
Sometimes, you can really see what he means, too. You can't argue with an opening line like "So just because I use salty phrases...". It grabs the attention, demands focus from the listener, and generally lays the groundwork for an amazing narrative, stuffed with quality one-liners.
Is it Liam's fault it never arrives? No it is not! It's YOUR fault for expecting it. You're not from where he's from, OK? You DON'T GET IT, SO DON'T EVEN TRY...
