David Jordan: "This Is What I've Been Put Here To Do"
This, ladies and gentlemen, is a STAR. He might not be the best-known of the pop performers of the world right now, and he might only have one hit single under his belt so far, but make no mistake, the man has got what it takes to be right up there with Justin and Pharrell and Fiddy...hell, even Chico!
The reason I know this has less to do with his musical ability - although there's no arguing with 'Sun Goes Down' at the moment - and more to do with the fact that, having spoken to him, it's very clear that he knows what elements are common to every massively-succesful pop star, and equally clear that he thinks he has these elements in spades.
This is by no means a bad thing. Humility is a much overrated virtue when it comes to the performance arts. These people are show-offs, for gawdsake! They're not down-to-earth, and there's absolutely no reason why they SHOULD be.
So it's always a relief in an interview with a new singer, like the one below, to hear him talk about how he would never have gone on The X-Factor because it would damage his "enigma and mystique". The fact that he's aware of the importance of these words is just proof that he has any idea of the job he is doing, and what it entails. This plus his enormous drive and self regard indicate that we've got a live one here. Watch him fly!*
What I Expected: For some reason, I had it in my head that David might be American (I was possibly thinking of John Legend, in an echo of the whole Wombats/Hoosiers confusion of a couple of weeks back), so everything that happened after me finally getting down to doing a bit of research and writing some questions was a bit of a surprise...
What I Did Not Expect: The X-Factor question seems to rile him a little bit...plus his journalism analogy is perhaps a little weird, given than people really do go on courses to become journalists...stopping the interview to give directions was fun too...
