The Pigeon Detectives - 'I Found Out'

Pigeon DetectivesDifficult to know what to do with this really. In a lot of ways this is the pinnacle of 2007 indie music. It's a sparky, shouty, vaguely-scuzzy, vaguely-polished new wave retread with an anthemic chorus, street romance lyrics and handclaps. It's like the Killers and the View pulling apart a song by the Shangri-Las and recasting it as a 'Teenage Kicks' for modern times.

It will doubtless appear on a lot of self-important compilation CDs, the ones where they claim to be pulling together all of 'your' music onto 'the only CD you'll ever need'. And it will be neither the best song on there, or the worst. Non-fans won't skip past it (or not always, anyway), and fans will be glad to hear it placed next to 'Delivery' by Babyshambles, 'Either Way' by the Twang, 'Mouthwash' by Kate Nash and something by the Arctic Monkeys...probably 'Flourescent Adolescent'.

Anyone sensing a but here? Thought so.

BUT! Despite all the perky dynamics (always a good thing), the fiery delivery (thumbs up!), the song's brevity (a pleasure to behold) and the handclapped final verse (like greeting an old friend at the airport)...there's something about this song - and the Pigeon Detectives in general - which screams "this will DO, I spose, until something better comes along".

So, while it's partly good to have a bit of a moment with this, you can just FEEL the seconds ticking away until you put the CD back on the shelf and get on with the rest of your life. Or, to put it into terms that the Pigeon Detectives themselves might understand, this is a quick snog/cuddle down a dark alley on a wild night out. You don't know each other's names, and you'll never meet again, but it's fun while it lasts.

And the only thing which is stopping this from being a REALLY GOOD cuddle/snog down a dark alley on a wild night out is that you just KNOW you're going to see the person you're snogging in the street-light in a second and wonder what the hell you were thinking. Which is kind of off-putting...

    Ho hum...

It's OK isn't it, for a 2 and a half minute forgettable indie-pop song likely to stutter into the top 20, fill a few floors till christmas and then end up in every charity shop bargain bin come 2009... They've done much better in the past though!

Coupled with that, there's just so much better out there - take a look at the likes of Tellison, Go Faster, Winterkids or I Was A Cub Scout for catchy indie pop stuff that does something a fair but more exciting - and is far less predictable.

Love these music journalists, they all talk s***

[That they do. And they never make it clear who they are, do they? They're scared, that's what it is. - FRASER]

Yep you totally trashed them :)
Sorry that was faulty English then
I do like one of their songs but -erm- I've forgotten what it was called
goes something like: "Does that really make any difference? She's got everything he wants, she's got everything he needs, take her back"
    Clearly lyrical genius eh?
Ah well you've got to have crap bands
    xx
