Omarion - 'Entourage'

OmarionHey, what's that smell? Is it...it IS...it's sunscreen! And that bloke at the bus-stop was sneezing, and dabbing his runny eyes...and he was standing next to a lady with skin like a prawn cocktail, and great big white shoulder-stripes where her vest-top had been the day before...something's going on. Wait, what's this tune on the radio? It's that bloke who had that cold song about his fridge, right? But it's different, warmer, brighter, it casts long shadows late into the evening...wait a moment! IS IT NEARLY SUMMER? AT LAST!

It's hard to say whether a song like this does well because it's an instantly memorable Stevie Wonder-ful partyjam, or because it's an instantly memorable Stevie Wonder-ful partyjam standing head and shoulders above a sea of drab, soundalike slowjams. I mean if everyone was filching ideas from the best of '70s synthfunk, this might only be considered a decent stab at it, rather than a radical change in the form.

As it is, despite being only marginally faster than some of the more nippy R&B dirges, this gritty ditty radiates GOODTIMES and FUNKY THINGS and GETTIN' FREAKY and stuff like that. It's nimble where other songs are flat-footed, it's sparkly where other songs are woollen and dead, and it sounds like Stevie Wonder, one of the child's handful of musicians who even come close to being worthy of a word like 'genius'.

Granted, there's a limit to how excited you can get hearing the same refrain circle around and around, and the song itself could be a little more memorable. Hell, even the pretend announcer in the video announces the song by singing that synthline rather than the words in the melody.

But you can't really blame him. That's one hell of a synthline going on there. You could build Stonehenge out of a riff like that. A funk Stonehenge, obv...all day-glo colours and flared boulders...

*daydreams rest of day away*
