Calvin Harris - 'Acceptable In The '80s'
I listened to this a few times first of all just to make sure it wasn't all about the glorification of shoulder pads, which it thankfully isn't. Just as well, because no matter how musically inspired it might have been, there's no way I could have got behind a song with such a frankly flawed inner message as that.

Another thing that was acceptable in the '80s, however, was electronica, which is quite handy because this song definitely doffs its hat to that particular genre. In fact, this is rather like a cheerier side of Gary Numan, one who doesn't worry about whether his friends are electric or not. It's repetitive in the way that a lot of electropop songs are, but the jerky, stop-starty nature of the song makes it incredibly catchy, and there's a giddy, wanton gleefulness about it that's rather appealing. Heck, while we're handing out points I'll also give out a few more for Calvin doing his own vocals rather than just sitting behind the decks and sampling someone else.
Perhaps I'm a little bit biased, but I'm also swayed favourably by Calvin proclaiming that he's got "love" and "hugs" for anyone born in the '80s. I was born in 1981, so where do I start queuing? I've got proof of ID and everything...

Heard this for the first time yesterday. Not my usual taste, but this is a cracking song that'll be soundtracking things and played in trash-chic clubs for years to come. One of the tunes of 2007 so far.
