Greil Marcus mentioned that he loved the Adverts first single 'One Chord Wonders' which immediately made me forgive him for overcomplicating rock and roll music with his books. He didn't mention it to me , of course, I mean that I read it in an article. The single's release was marked in a Stiff RecordsÌýadvert (naturally) in the NME which read - 'The Adverts Know One Chord , The Damned Know Three - Hear All Four OnÌý Tour.......'

Five years into the show, and the first appearance by the Boomtown Rats. What'sÌýgoing on there then ? The first 'new wave' band to have aÌýnumber one, leading lights of the Dublin punk scene, former NME writer singing ? Not good enough to prevent their punk rock licences being revoked it seems. For those of you who notice such things, tonight's showÌýmarks five years of the AfterÌýMidnightÌýPunk Rock Experience.ÌýNothing has changed, it's still punk rock records from the golden age of punk rock records. Although five years ago I would never have imagined Howard Devoto from Magazine becoming Howard Devoto from Buzzcocks, but that's what's planned for May. In the meantime hear Howard with his Magazine chums Barry Adamson , John McGeoch and Dave Formula who may have been more muso than the Buzzcocks, but shouldn't be condemned for that. Sometimes, a swirling keyboard (not to be encouraged normally) is just what a record needs.
Also tonight, the first song from the first side of the first Clash LP - Janie Jones, one of the songs they recorded over three weekends in February of 1977. If they'd been in during the week as well, you never know what they could have achieved.

Few songs, punk rock or otherwise, begin with the line 'You bought the sofa that I wanted for years' but The Mumps manage to come up with those very words. A great punk band name but they're not too widely known outside America. Inside the USA their singer Lance Loud (not his real name) was known as the twenty two year old in an early reality TV show called An American Family. It was so long ago that we didn't even call those showsÌý "reality TV" : they were "Fly On The Wall" . Lance achieved fame by coming out during the show, which in 1973 was a Big Deal. A career with The Mumps was never going to reach those dizzy heights, especially as they never got a proper record deal. "Crocodile Tears" is from the 'Fatal Charm' compilation , on Eggbert Records. Eggbert Records was not one of the Great American Record Companies. Unfortunately.
