I admit that its not the punk rockingestÌýway to remember him, but then maybe the original fans who still wander around Dunfermline in his honour would like nothing better than sitting down to get their breath back. They still hav e a hundred pounds left to raise before December, the tenth anniversary of his passing. I know I am yet again very tardy in my recounting of the tales of punk rock past, but I couldn't find my shoes. Speaking of shoes, Elvis Costello was only 22 when he brought out his first LP. I remember an NME snippet where Joe Strummer , in an attempt to find out whether Mr Costello's glasses were , you know, actual specs, tried them on and then walked into a wall. Thereby proving the existence of a lens, not plain pane glass. Of course, as the NME said, Joe would have done that even if they weren't. He was the comedian of the Clash.

Pete Shelley's shopping list of requirements for a full and balanced life is one of the minor gems from Another Music In A Different Kitchen, the first and finest of Buzzcock's LPs. Produced by Martin Rushent, whose death last month went unnoticed by me, much to my shame. He was the punk rock producerÌýofÌý1978 - as well as AMIADK, there was Black And White by The Stranglers and the first Generation X LP. Oh, and 999's Separates as well. Busy man, who finally made a bit of cash a few years later when the Human League used himÌýfor 'Dare'.
On a different matter, apologies for playing the whole of 'Crazy Rhythms' by the Feelies.ÌýSix minutes and ten seconds, they stretched it out to.ÌýI would haveÌýstopped after three minutes but it didn't seem right to edit another person's song. Unless specifically requested, of course. Has anyone else been particularly irritated by a good songÌýextended beyondÌýits worthÌý? Suggestions welcome.

I resisted the temptation to play the obvious Jam single referring to the story of the day, because it's not that great. Instead I mark the anniversary of the recording of Eddie & The Hot Rods' finest fifteen minutes, the 'Live At The Marquee' EP. I remember where I was when I heard it on the radio (Billy Doherty's mother's kitchen) in the summer and I also remember where I was the night they recorded it, July 9th 1976. We were camping in the back garden of Feargal Sharkey's sister's house in Shroove in Donegal. I realise these locations aren't very rock n roll, but the records are, so there are two outings tonight. Speaking of the Jam, though, there's a great version of a Small Faces song, recorded during the Sound Affects LP. Amidst a slew of redundant covers, this is very good.

There aren't enough riots at pop concerts these days. Tonight's show features Iggy Pop complaining about a beer bottle hitting his head, at the end of Louie Louie. The recording is taken from the infamous 'Metallic KO' live LP, recorded February 1974. There's another riot reference with the Jesus And Mary Chain, whose 1985 North London Polytechnic fracas was listed at number 29 in the Guardian's history of notable events in Indie Music. Does anyone else feel there's something not quite right about the Guardian producing a booklet about Indie Music ? Or is it just this grumpy old punk rocker ?
Ending tonight with a song from Ìýthe MC5's 'Kick Out The Jams' LP. I don't think there was a riot at their shows, but it wasn't for the lack of trying by the band.
