Asylum - making an asylum decision

Description

Dora Day is an Asylum Case Owner at Heathrow Airport, and decides whether an asylum-seeker will be granted access to the country. We see what happens when an asylum-seeker arrives in the UK, including passport control.

Classroom Ideas

Following the clip, students could participate in a group activity where students are given a number of pieces of evidence relating to one particular asylum case. Ask students to initially decide upon the credibility of evidence by looking at whether it is subjective or objective. Then have them decide if asylum should be granted. Different groups within the class could have different cases. Investigate the wider implications of cultural differences and different social behaviours in situations such as asylum interviews and elsewhere in society. Examples given in the clip include eye contact and physical greetings such as handshakes, bowing and nodding.
