Input, process and output

Description

Teen Canteen is a catering project set up and run by a group of secondary students. Their business advisor shows them that to create the business output they want from their factors of production, they must work backwards. Once they have a goal, they can create the processes that will get them there. He also demonstrates different companies that have similar outputs but very different processes, including a large-scale food factory. This explores the difference between capital and labour intensive processes, and why they are suitable in different situations. He also outlines the importance of preparation as part of a process, to ensure a smooth experience for customers.

Classroom Ideas

Students could be provided with hypothetical business models which outline output and resources, which they then have to suggest a production process for. As in the clip, students could visit a local business, view their production and report back on why this model has been chosen and how successful it is.
