Biodiversity and the human implications

Description

Biodiversity is the planet’s full range of life forms. Humans are only one species among millions and biodiversity benefits humans and other species alike.

Experts discuss why we need biodiversity. This includes food, medicines, industrial products, gene pool preservation, biological services such as pollination and cleaning water. We also have an ethical responsibility of stewardship over other species on the planet.

Classroom Ideas

Students could discuss disadvantages to humans if biodiversity is reduced. They could explore the classroom, and research how much of what they see originates from a plant of animal. They could create a spider diagram that explains some of the ways in which a wide range of plants and animals are useful to us, in the manufacture of everything from medicines to furniture to clothing and more.
