Three generations of refugees discuss how and why they sought asylum in Britain. We hear their emotional stories of escape and sanctuary from conflicts across the decades.

Students could be encouraged to investigate the impact of asylum seeking on individuals and the wider community. Ask student to create a role-play or creative writing exercise about escaping home. They could include what they would take with them, who they would ask for help or where they would go. This could then be used as a stimulus for discussion on the extent to which safe countries have a duty to support refugees escaping danger. The class could look into statistics on asylum seekers in Scotland and the UK. How many people apply for asylum, how many are granted it, and what is the process like. Discuss what restrictions, roles and responsibilities asylum seekers live with and the social inequalities that result.
