The end of slavery

Description

The slave trade was abolished in 1807, but it wasn’t until 1833 that Britain abolished slavery throughout the Empire. The government paid out a total of 20 million pounds in compensation to plantation owners.

Classroom Ideas

The clip could act as a recap to study of slavery and abolition. Students could be asked to consider what the lasting global impact of both has been. This could work as a jump-off point for moving onto study of the civil rights movement in the USA, Afro-Caribbean immigration to the UK or more in depth study of the British Empire and Colonialism.
