Post-1945 segregation

Description

Racial segregation was deeply ingrained in life in the USA. Almost every aspect of the lives of blacks and whites were separate, and African-Americans were considered second-rate citizens in a first-rate country

Classroom Ideas

This clip could be used as background to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Explore the background of legal support for the ‘separate but equal’ doctrine. In particular the Plessy v Ferguson case of 1896 could be looked at and specifically compared with the actions of Rosa Parks and the Freedom Riders. Look for evidence on the quality and availability of segregated facilities and discuss whether this supports or opposes the idea of equal treatment.
