Guernica and Franco's victory
Description
The British government did not want the Spanish Civil War to escalate into a Europe-wide conflict and so signed up to the non-intervention committee. The German Luftwaffeâs bombing of Guernica acted as an example of the military strategy that would be used in World War II. The decision led to the resignation of Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden.
Classroom Ideas
Students could be asked to research the questions: âHow unified were the British government in their policy of appeasement?â and, âHow did the Spanish Civil War alter public opinion towards the policy?â
