Incomers to rural Wales

Description

A look at the effects of non-Welsh-speaking incomers on Pen-y-bont-fawr, a village in Powys. It shows the work of the local schools in assimilating the newcomers.

Classroom Ideas

This clip could be used when looking at the theme of area and as a starting point for a discussion on the use of Welsh in the local area. Students could be asked to research census statistics for the numbers of Welsh speakers in various parts of Wales and then discuss the reasons for the variations from area to area. Another task that could be set is to ask learners to use the conditional tense when responding to the question: “Hoffet ti fyw mewn ardal mwy/ llai Cymreig?” (“Would you like to live in a more/ less Welsh area?”)
