Powerful volcanic eruptions
Description
An animation of the Mount Pinatubo eruption of 1991 in the Philippines and its effect on the global climate. The eruption caused sulphur dioxide and ash particles to be ejected into the atmosphere. This resulted in less infrared radiation entering the atmosphere and more heat being absorbed rather than being reflected back to the Earth. This led to global cooling. Temperature levels didnât return to normal until 1994.
Classroom Ideas
Use this as part of an exploration of the range of factors that can influence climate change. Students working on the different opinions on man-made and natural climate change could watch this clip and develop a commentary to go along with the animation. They could then use this as part of a debate or extended writing about the variety of factors that could influence the global climate. This could also include Milankovitch cycles.
