The effects of climate on development and health

Description

Extreme weather conditions threaten food supplies and degrade the environment in developing countries. A country’s physical environment is critical to the health of the people, according to Linda Doull of the Merlin Charity.

Classroom Ideas

List the factors that can limit development and produce a flow diagram of the sequence of events that hampers development in each case. Students should note the cyclical nature of many of these sequences. This can contribute to an introduction to climate-induced natural hazards which can affect different areas of the world, or to the problems facing developing countries. It can help highlight the concept that development is largely dictated by physical rather than cultural factors. This can be used in the study of climate change and which countries and people will be most affected by it.
