It’s Declan’s birthday and he’s had a special delivery, watch as he explains to Pip all about the postal service.

Have you ever received a letter in the post? Maybe it was a birthday card, like Declan. It could be a postcard from your friend on holiday or a parcel from an online shop with your new toy inside. Whatever it is, getting post addressed to you is always exciting.

It is the job of postmen and women to make sure that everything gets delivered to the correct person, as quickly as possible. What sort of things can you write on an envelope to help them do this?

It costs money to post things, but how can we pay for a letter if we just drop it into a post-box? Stamps of course! There are lots of different kind of stamps that you can buy depending on what you are posting, and they all cost different amounts. Stamps have been around for hundreds of years, they are usually small, square pieces of paper with glue on the back. They are stuck in the corner of an envelope to let the post service know that you have already paid for the delivery.

It might be fun to send a letter to someone you know, as a surprise. You could even address it to yourself if you prefer. I don’t think Pip’s idea to post Declan’s cake is a good one though, just imagine the mess!
