Measuring temperature using a thermometer

Description

A demonstration of how to measure the air temperature using a thermometer. There are temperature differences between day and night, and the temperature varies between shade and full sunshine. We can describe the temperature as being hot, mild, chilly or freezing.

Classroom Ideas

Students could conduct an experiment to find the warmest and coolest places around the school. They could make predictions before going outside to measure the temperatures. Were their predictions correct?

Students record their findings in a bar graph. They could then compare the mean, median, mode and range of the temperatures in and around the school. They could also explore the temperatures at different times of the day.

Students could also use daily temperature readings in their school playground and compare this with other places around the World. Using online weather forecasts, students could record temperatures daily and then create a graph to compare results.
