Set and costume design

Description

Set and costume designer Bob Crawley describes his route into this job and explains what first caught his interest in terms of design and talks about the skills and qualities required in the job. He cites curiosity as perhaps more important than technical skills, as a stage designer needs a keen interest in researching all kinds of contexts and historical eras. There are glimpses of the set of ‘Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland’ in construction, including the Cheshire Cat, a three dimensional version of the original illustration.

Classroom Ideas

This clip provides a good example of all the aspects of costume and set design that need to be considered. Both need to work together to set the tone of the production. They also have to work in relation to how the performers move and relate to each other. Students should consider how to feed some of the points raised in the clip into their own design work.
