Rock climbing edging technique

Edging is one of the most important basics of how to use your feet on different climbing terrain to become a better climber.

  • Take up a position on a climbing wall no more than one metre off the ground.
  • In this position, look at the next foot hold for placing your foot onto.
  • Do not move the foot straight away. Look at the best spot to get the most grip.
  • If the foot hold is positioned to drive you upwards, you will probably use your inside edge. Place your big toe on the optimal spot ready to shift your weight.
  • If the foot hold is positioned for traversing or moving laterally along a wall, you will probably use your outside edge. Place your outside edge on the optimal spot ready to shift your weight and as this is the weaker part of the foot, begin looking for your next route setter.
  • Continue to use your arms as discussed in previous climbing sections.
