Since the beginning of creation God, in His gracious purpose, provided marriage as the accepted way in which a man and a woman may come together as husband and wife. This is the only basis on which marriage can take place within the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.

One of the functions of marriage is to provide a stable family unit, within the wider community, in which children can be born and nurtured.

The intimate community of life and love which constitutes the married state has been established by the Creator and endowed by Him with its own proper laws ... God himself is the author of marriage.

Christian marriage has a two-fold purpose – fellowship and parenthood. Permanence in the union is an essential condition.
