The boccia drawing shot

The purpose of a drawing shot is to play a ball so that it stops at a specific length.

A shot is deemed to be successful if:

  • it rolls up next to the jack and settles in close proximity to the jack
  • it blocks an opponent's shot by stopping between the jack and the throwing line
  • it protects a winning ball by blocking the line between the winning ball and the throwing line

A successful shot will need to:

  • have a decent height when thrown so that the ball does not decelerate too rapidly by being in contact with the ground
  • be weighted accurately so that it reaches the jack but does not pass it by
  • be accurate in direction, usually towards the jack
