Key and map symbols

Just like a key to a door, the key helps you to unlock the information stored in the colours and symbols on a map. You must understand how the key relates to the map before you can unlock the information it contains. The key will help you to identify things like roads, buildings, agriculture, tourist attractions, forestry, industry and geographical features.

The key below is taken from an OS map. This will help you interpret the map and answer map related questions. For example, at Fourth Level, you might be asked to refer to a particular area of a map and use a number of symbols to reach a conclusion or be able to analyse the suitability of an area for a particular land use. You can use your six-figure grid references to locate a specific symbol or point on a map

OS maps use standard symbols. For example, a cross represents a place of worship. A youth hostel is a red triangle. A lighthouse has a symbol which resembles a lighthouse.
