UN Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations have issued 17 ambitious goals to try and build a better, fairer, and more sustainable future for the world.

Sustainable Development Goal 1 aims to end poverty.

According to the UN, in 1990 around 36 per cent of the world's population lived in extreme poverty. By 2015 this number had fallen to around 10 per cent. While this is progress, there is still much more to do to eliminate poverty. More than 700 million people, or 10 per cent of the world population, still live in extreme poverty.

Global poverty facts

• About 79 per cent of the world’s poor live in rural areas.
• 46 per cent of extremely poor people are children under 14 years of age.
• 8 per cent of employed workers and their families worldwide lived in extreme poverty in 2018.
• In 2016, 55 per cent of the world’s population did not benefit from any form of social protection.
