How can we check for bias?

Being balanced doesn’t mean you always have to present a different opinion when you are simply stating facts. For example, when reporting on climate change where scientists agree it is a major problem.

However, it is important even when reporting facts that we check the journalist isn’t being selective in the facts they choose. For example, only picking the evidence that backs up their argument.

This is where it is important to:

  • double check what you are reading and watching
  • search on the internet to see if anyone has any other opinions on the same issue
  • compare the stories
  • you might need to make up your own mind on what to believe based on the facts you have found out

We have to be especially careful of what we read on the internet and social media because these are often people’s opinions and don’t need to be checked to make sure they are accurate.
