Trust launches review of Radio 2 and 6 Music

Date: 07.05.2009     Last updated: 12.04.2016 at 11.59

The ±«Óătv Trust has today begun its service review into ±«Óătv Radio 2 and ±«Óătv Radio 6 Music. This is the latest of the regular service reviews that the Trust carries out on all ±«Óătv services.

To ensure licence fee payers are getting the best out of the ±«Óătv, the Trust will review every ±«Óătv service at least every five years. The Trust has already completed two of these reviews and a third, on the ±«Óătv's services for younger audiences, is scheduled to report soon.

This review will examine Radio 2 and 6 Music's current performance and the ±«Óătv's future plans for the services. There will be a 12 week period of consultation, beginning today, when the public will be able to give their opinions on the two services. The final report will be published in early 2010.

The review will look at the services' performance including the stations' usage, quality, distinctiveness and value for money.

David Liddiment, ±«Óătv Trustee, who is leading the review for the Trust, said:

"Radio 2 is the most listened to radio station in the UK and its sister station 6 Music is growing in popularity. As part of the review we want to hear from as many listeners as possible with their views on the services – good and bad.

"As well as the current performance of the services we'll also be looking at the ±«Óătv's future plans for the stations to ensure they are robust and deliverable. If change is needed we can alter the stations' service licences or ask the ±«Óătv Executive to address the issues we raise."

Public consultation

The public consultation will be available on the Trust's website for 12 weeks. The consultation will be promoted on Radio 2 and 6 Music, on the ±«Óătv website, and with a leaflet available at public libraries and ±«Óătv buildings.

Separate guidance has been issued for organisations wishing to respond.

Terms of reference

Full terms of reference for the review are available.

As part of the review the Trust will not be examining editorial controls, talent costs or compliance with the ±«Óătv's independent quota for radio as these topics are currently being covered by other pieces of work being carried out by the Trust Unit.

Notes to editors

1. This is the Trust's fourth service review. Previously the Trust has published service reviews of bbc.co.uk and the ±«Óătv's services for children, and will soon conclude its review of ±«Óătv services for young people.

±«Óătv Radio 2's remit is to deliver a distinctive mixed music and speech service appealing to all age groups over 35.

2. ±«Óătv 6 Music's remit is to entertain lovers of popular music with a service offering music from the 1960s to the present day.
