Will India struggle to thrive unless it changes its work culture?

| Thursday, 9 Sept. 2010 | 18:06 - 19:00 GMT

It's fair to say that a lot of emails we've received about Delhi's preparations could be placed into two schools of thought. And they are...

1) India's work culture is flawed and the problems in Delhi are symptomatic of that. If the culture doesn't change, it'll never be able to deliver as South Africa and China did when they had their moments in the spotlight.

2) This is how India works, but don't worry Delhi will be ready, if at the last minute. Developed countries don't understand that we get things done in a different way to them.

Which do you side with?

Clifford Boateng emailed - India like most developing nations lack organization, planning and timly execution. No wonder it's hard for such nations to break into the developed status. There is no excuse for lackdaisal attitude and tardiness.

Ruben Martinez Dominguez - May all what is going on in India be proving that the country is not ready to take that step forward to become a more competitive economic country in the world?

Vera, Toronto emailed - It is not the fault of the Indian people but that of the Indian Government. Like so may countries in the world the people of the country suffer or have to put of with all sorts of problems because their goverment leaders are paralytically useless, self centred and quite honestly corrupt

Anush emailed - The middle classes have long abdicated from politics. Many left the country all together. The provider of public goods, therefore, has been captured by special interests. The question the rest of the world should be asking is, how can Indians put up with the government that they have?

Nittin Raj - "listen to what Australian cricketer Micheal Clark said "i've always felt safe in India, they protect us like gold". Yes agree with you on hygene part that should be clean but they were on process for that. Village was due to open today and not all were to be accomodated and by the time all would be full that should have been cleared out

Paul Farrell - India has a problem owning up to its awful work ethic and finds it easier to blame the west for expecting clean and habitable facilities. There were none of these issues when Manchester hostf the games FACT.

Linda emailed - I have not worked in India but do work with people in India. Those I work with are always agreeabe the problem is in effectively doing the work on the first try. There is also an issue with independent thought, thay will do EXACTLY what they are asked to do even if it does not make sense.

Sunil Anand emailed - I'm Indian and here aré my thoughts : India just cares for the most part about its economic image and its technological rise is portrayed as a land of opportunity for the corporate west. This also manifests itself with IPL. If the commonwealth games were a corporate initative with a money making corporate machine at the healm, we would all be talking about a grand infrastructure now!

Mary Bratton emailed - I hear so many Indians saying that this is how they live. Dengue is always around. We have a different standard of cleanliness. It is all pretty sad. I know when I am having guests in my home I try to make them comfortable. I don't tell them to get used to a filthy bathroom. I clean it

Chandra Chaterji emailed - I am proud to be an Indian citizen. Indians know how to do things up to world class standards. Look at Silicon Valley, The City, London, The Gulf, Singapore, Durban, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Gujarat, etc. The problem with the CWG has been a complete failure of project management--something we know about--because of the idiots running it.
