Tyrfe Tawe

By Arwel Micah
July 2005, Swansea
A digital story from Dimension 10

"Things don't normally materialise from drunken thoughts but this was real enough. Spilt beer was soaking through my trousers, as I sat behind a row of barriers. Another jolt another drink spilt. Tyrfe Tawe was now on its third day and had moved on to a subterranean club after gigs in other venues across the city. How lucky had we been to come across this cellar, a hidden gem beneath the streets of Swansea. You could imagine a fresh faced Beatle was playing in this sort of place. This had all started on a drunken night eight long months ago. I had gotten into a conversation with a group of people who I barely knew and we ended up agreeing on creating a music festival.

At the time I was thinking of leaving Swansea. I had no real reason to stay nor did I want to. I had a few months to go until graduating and my mind was already elsewhere. But here I was four months after graduating being covered in beer without a care. The reason for Tyrfe Tawe was to try and create an awareness of Welsh language music in Swansea, to take it out of the periphery of society and put it bang on in the centre of a city.

I have since moved from Swansea but I have now many reasons to return. One day possibly I will. Tyrfe Tawe is now going as strong as ever and will be happening again in autumn. Who knows what will come from the next drunken idea."
