Remember to use child-friendly scissors and supervise at all times.

What are the benefits of making toys with toddlers?

  • Playing with toys can spark your child's imagination as they reimagine household items and create characters
  • It can develop their problem-solving skills by asking questions about their creation
  • Guiding children when using tools such as scissors and glue sticks will help them to improve the fine motor skills needed
  • Having fun together is a great bonding activity!

How to talk through making toys

Allow your child to use their imagination and let them take the lead.

Ask simple questions like, 'what's next?' to help develop their problem-solving skills.

Encourage conversation by asking them to describe what their creation is and what they are doing at each step.

Take turns doing the actions, say to them 'Mummy's turn to play with the dragon' / 'Kai's turn to play with the dragon'.

Ask them what the name is of any character they make and use your imagination to ask other questions and keep the conversation flowing e.g. 'What do they like to eat?' or 'Where does he live?'.
