Why sing Pop Goes The Weasel with children?
Pop Goes the Weasel is a great example of anticipation play. Anticipation is the feeling someone gets when they know something is about to happen.
Babies and children learn this skill, when they play games which have the same fun ending each time, like peekaboo or what's in the bag.
When we play these kinds of games, it teaches children skills like waiting, watching and closely observing our facial expressions. It also encourages them to listen to our voices. These are all vital skills in learning to communicate well.
Pop Goes the Weasel has a similar result. After you've sung the rhyme with your baby a couple of times, try stopping before the final line. How does your baby react?
Do they try and say the word? Or do they get excited or confused when you don't say? These are all signs that they're learning to predict what's going to happen next.
To make it extra exciting, why not try adding an extra sensory layer to your "pop"? You could tickle baby, waves your hands or blow a kiss.
