A journey through time…

Please note that the 500 Words competition for 2020 is now closed.

2020 was the 10th year of the 500 Words story writing competition – the biggest of its kind in the world for children. In this Live Lesson, we celebrate all that 500 Words achieved over the decade by travelling through time and gathering inspiration from amazing stories that defy time and space.

The lesson look at ways we can take inspiration from the past, present and future, and use those ideas to create some ageless tales that will go down in the history books, paying particular attention to the audience we're writing for, the point of view we're writing from and how to end a story.

Designed to spark the imaginations of children aged 5 – 13 and encourage them to create new and original stories, this live, interactive programme is hosted by ±«Óătv Radio 2's Breakfast Show host Zoe Ball, C±«Óătv’s Rhys Stephenson and Hacker T Dog.

They are joined in the studio by 500 Words Judges, Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Charlie Higson and Francesca Simon who provide our budding writers with their top tips and advice on how to start their own 500 Words stories.

This edited programme was first streamed live to schools in January 2020. Please note that we are no longer reviewing emails and messages from schools for inclusion in the lesson.
