Video summary

Perfumer Linda Pilkington talks about her life, in order to spark creativity and ambition.

Linda explains that, as a child, she would keep her mother’s perfume bottles because she thought they were treasure.

These bottles held a magical quality for her.

They sparked her imagination and senses, and they've never lost their intrigue.

A chance meeting with an old friend who remembered her childhood love for perfume, gave her the opportunity to come up with her very own scent.

Since then she has spent time hunting down original smells, and tells us about the ambergris – a much sought after perfume ingredient that’s actually whale vomit.

Teacher Notes

This clip could be used to begin a project on successful people. Pupils could use the four section titles as prompts to create and script interview questions.

They could carry out the interview with someone who they know is successful, for example, a local business owner or relative.

Pupils could then turn this interview into a project file, an article, a presentation to the class, or they could film their interview and create their own little film on their chosen successful person.

This clip will be relevant for teaching Modern Studies at KS2 and KS3 in England and Wales, and 2nd level in Scotland.
