Join Rhys Stephenson for a special C±«Óătv Book Club celebrating all things World Book Day 2022!

Rhys is joined by children’s literary stars to chat about World Book Day. Astronaut Tim Peake rockets in to tell us about the books he read in space and why World Book Day is important to him, Ben Bailey Smith aka Doc Brown is answering C±«Óătv viewer questions, Humza Arshad tells us how Little Badman is celebrating World Book Day and Cressida Cowell tells us all about the magic of reading, how to get involved and the importance of diversity in children’s books.

C±«Óătv Book Club is all about celebrating books and getting children excited about reading! Each month Rhys Stephenson is joined by authors, illustrators and celebrities to talk about their latest books, stories they loved reading when they were young, the creative ways in which they write/illustrate and most importantly, getting children involved with games, challenges and book reviews.

Teacher Notes

The importance of reading for 7-11 year-olds is of course widely known, with government guidance across the UK putting a firm emphasis on the importance of reading for pupil development.

This programme helps to foster and reinforce a positive attitude towards reading. It might inspire your pupils to pick up a new book, perhaps in a genre they haven't explored before, helping them to develop a reading habit over time. It might also help your pupils gain an appreciation of the UK's rich and varied literary heritage, as C±«Óătv Book Club programmes feature writers from all walks of life.

Activities to further explore learning after watching the programme in class

Encourage pupils to recommend a book they have enjoyed to their peers, giving reasons for their choices. They could start with a 'five word review', like in the programme, or expand the activity to a full presentation in class.

Pupils could be asked to draft and write a short piece on why World Book Day is important to them. It might be inspired by Cressida Cowell's reason at the beginning of the programme, that 'reading is magic and magic is for everyone'. Pupils could present their piece to the class or proofread each other's written pieces.

Rhys has the enviable job of interviewing all kinds of writers for C±«Óătv Book Club. Your pupils could prepare for an imaginary interview with their favourite author. What might they like to ask their author about the themes of their book? What might they want to check that they have understood correctly about the book? What might they like to ask about a character's feelings, motivations or actions? Encourage pupils to evidence their questions from the book itself.

Challenge pupils to write a short story inspired by three emojis. You might choose the three emojis in this programme - brain, otter, guitar - or the three emojis in the image of Rhys at the top of this page - world, book, smiley face - or you might choose your own.

Rhys asks author Humza Arshad how one of his characters might celebrate World Book Day. Challenge pupils to imagine how a character from a fiction book they've read, or a real person from a non-fiction book, might celebrate World Book Day. Encourage pupils to evidence their ideas from the text itself.

Curriculum Notes

This programme is suitable for use with pupils aged 7-12. It is designed primarily for use in English lessons with KS2 pupils in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and with 2nd Level pupils in Scotland.
