Eli and Joe encounter bullying and racism during a football game in the park.

After initially persuading Aamira's brother Salim and friend Amar to play, things soon get ugly.

Aamira arrives and is drawn into the conflict.

As well as bullying Eli, Salim also makes provocative comments about Joe being a 'drug-dealing white boy'.

Teacher Notes

Students could be asked to identify the bullying behaviour in this clip.

They could explore how Eli and Joe felt when this bullying behaviour was directed towards them.

They could also consider why Salim acted in this way. How might he have developed these racist views? Are they true?

Students could discuss the idea that bullying behaviour and racism often comes from not understanding and valuing differences.

Students could work in pairs and be asked to find three things they have in common and three things that are different.

They could then discuss how these differences are good things.

Students could devise their own strategies to value the wide range of differences in the classroom, for example, students could teach each other about their different cultures or religions.

Alternatively, students could work in small groups, and each be given a different bullying scenario.

They could discuss these and consider how they would respond if they experienced this behaviour or witnessed it.

Students could then role-play the situation and try to find a resolution amongst those involved.

This clip will be relevant for teaching PSHE and Modern Studies at KS2 in England and Northern Ireland, PSE at KS2 in Wales and First Level and Second Level in Scotland.
