The Special Olympics GB 2013 National Summer Games will be held in Bath.

The National Summer Games take place every four years, and 1,700 athletes will compete in the event between 28 August and 1 September 2013.

"This will require a large amount of assistance and energy from the local population," Karen Wallin, Special Olympics GB's CEO, said.

The University of Bath will be the venue for the majority of the 12 sports which make up the event.

The sports village of the university was used as a base for a number of countries competing at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The 12 sports that make up the National Summer Games are athletics, artistic gymnastics, football, boccia, badminton, short-mat bowls, golf, rhythmic gymnastics, table tennis, tenpin bowling, tennis and swimming.

Special Olympics GB is the largest registered charity which provides year-round sports training and competition opportunities for almost 1.2 million intellectually disabled people in the UK.
