Where can I find categories on ��tv Sounds?

On the ��tv Sounds website and ��tv Sounds mobile/tablet app, head to the homepage and scroll down. You'll find the Categories grid just above your Bookmarks.

Once you're there, click on View all categories to see our full list of categories on ��tv Sounds. From there you can search through several music or speech categories and subcategories.

You can sort categories and subcategories by Popular, Latest or A-Z. If a category is split into subcategories, for example Comedy, just scroll down the list of subcategories to the All Comedy section. Then click View all. From there, you can filter the entire category by Popular, Latest or A-Z.

Using the ��tv Sounds TV app?

Head to the ��tvpage and scroll down to find the list of categories. You can select to view all categories on the right hand side.

When in view all, you can choose to Browse all Music or Browse all Speech.

Why has the ��tv closed the iPlayer Radio app?

��tv Sounds is now the home for all ��tv audio. As well as 80,000 hours of radio, exclusive music mixes and brilliant podcasts, ��tv Sounds now has all the key features iPlayer Radio had and much more, including live radio streams, Live Restart, Continue Listening, My Sounds, more categories, and personalised and curated recommendations.

When did this happen?

The ��tv Sounds website was launched in late 2018. The ��tv Sounds app replaced the iPlayer Radio app in the UK in September 2019, and the international iPlayer Radio app closed in Autumn 2020.

Why can’t I use the ��tv Sounds app on my device?

It is standard practice for updated apps to no longer support older operating systems. This is the case for iPlayer as well as iPlayer Radio, and apps by other companies and organisations. The ��tv Sounds app requires users to have a device which is capable of running iOS 12.2, Android 5 or Amazon OS 5 (or above). Supporting operating systems older than this is very costly and does not represent good value for money for licence fee payers, given the relatively small number of users we have still using those older operating systems. However, in the majority of cases users who have older devices which cannot be upgraded can still use ��tv Sounds via the web at bbc.co.uk/sounds. What devices and operating systems does ��tv Sounds support?

��tv Sounds app requires users to have a device which is capable of running iOS 12.2, Android 5 or Amazon OS 5 (or above). You can read more on this here: Can I use ��tv Sounds on my mobile or tablet. Here's where you can find the app:

Why has the iPlayer Radio app closed outside the UK?

The ��tv Sounds app is now available in app stores around the world. We closed the international iPlayer Radio app in November 2020 as part of our plan to make ��tv Sounds the one place for all ��tv audio.

Why can't I install ��tv Sounds in my country?

The ��tv Sounds app is not available in a small number of countries. To continue listening, you can use the ��tv Sounds website at bbc.co.uk/sounds. More details are available here: Can I use ��tv Sounds on my mobile or tablet?

Where can I find the schedules for radio stations?

On the ��tv Sounds website

Head to the schedules page to find the schedules for every national and local ��tv radio station. Just select a radio station to see its schedule for today.

You can also find the schedules from the top right corner of the ��tv Sounds website homepage:

On the ��tv Sounds app

At the top of the homepage, tap Stations & Schedules. This will default to the schedule for the station you last listened to live.

Swipe across the stations at the top to see the schedule for each station.
Swipe across or tap the arrows underneath the station to see the schedule for a specific date.

At the moment, schedules aren't available on the ��tv Sounds TV app, however you can still listen to live streams and on-demand programmes, as well as your favourite shows in My Sounds.

What happened to My Tracks?

Due to low usage, ��tv Music took the decision to close the functionality of adding tracks to My Tracks.

We regularly evaluate features and services and this helps us prioritise what we develop. So while this feature has closed, ��tv Sounds now allows you to export the songs you've heard to either Spotify or Apple Music. Head to the Can I export a song to my music streaming service? page for more information.

You will still be able to find the best music-related audio from across the ��tv, including radio, podcasts, and music mixes, at ��tv Sounds.

Video, including programmes and performance clips, can be found in the Music category on ��tv iPlayer.

Can I listen to ��tv podcasts on Google platforms (including Google ��tv and Google Podcast app)?

The ��tv requires platforms (such as Google’s Assistant) to meet certain conditions for ��tv content to be available on their services. We seek to make our content as accessible to audiences as possible, but until it can be made available in a way that meets our Terms of Use and the ��tv’s Distribution Policy, certain ��tv content will be unavailable through specific Google products.

What is affected?

Listeners will have difficulty accessing ��tv podcasts via the Google Podcast app and they will not be able to directly access ��tv podcasts via the Google Assistant (Google ��tv).

Where can listeners go instead?

In the UK, listeners will still be able to access our podcasts on the free ��tv Sounds app and website. UK listeners using Google ��tv can continue to access ��tv podcasts by casting from the ��tv Sounds app or, if using a laptop, the ��tv Sounds website on the Chrome browser. Outside the UK, listeners can access our podcasts on the ��tv Sounds website (where casting is supported) and the ��tv Sounds app (where available).

Are any other podcast services affected by this change?

No. This only affects Google.

Changes to ��tv Radio on TuneIn

The ��tv’s live radio streams are no longer available via TuneIn on the following platforms in the UK.

The ��tv’s radio stations can be accessed on the ��tv Sounds website and apps for Android and iOS devices, which also let you play programmes on a wide range of speakers via wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, Chromecast and Apple AirPlay.

If you have Amazon Echo speakers or many other devices which support Alexa, you can listen to ��tv radio stations via the ��tv’s Alexa skill. And, if you have a Google ��tv device, you can listen to ��tv stations using either Chromecast or your voice. ��tv stations can also be accessed on digital TV platforms and DAB digital radio.

There are a number of older audio devices that offer an internet radio service powered by TuneIn which will not currently be affected by this change.

If you can no longer play ��tv live radio on your internet radio device, it is likely it was using the Shoutcast streaming technology, which the ��tv no longer supports. We will continue to support ��tv live radio online using HLS and DASH streaming technologies which will be available to the ��tv’s distribution partners.

Why did Shoutcast support end?

Shoutcast is an older streaming technology and many connected radio devices in the UK no longer use it for ��tv streams. Ending support for Shoutcast will enable us to focus on the two most popular technologies currently used – HLS and DASH. This will allow us to understand more about how and where our content is consumed and will help us improve the services we offer to our listeners. Manufacturers and radio aggregators were notified of the changes in May 2022. We also played a message informing of the changes on all ��tv Shoutcast streams since November last year.

Can I get ��tv live radio back on my Internet Radio device?

Please contact your manufacturer if you have lost ��tv live radio to check if your device can be updated. If this is not possible, you still might be able to use the device by streaming live ��tv radio from the ��tv Sounds app on a smartphone or tablet (Bluetooth, Airplay or Chromecast).

Changes to live ��tv radio streams

We are making changes to how we support internet radio streams. If you listen via ��tv Sounds (or a device that is listed on the Sounds help site) you will not be affected, but if you use a third-party app, an internet radio or bespoke device, these changes may affect you.

Why are you making these changes?

The ��tv must do everything reasonable to ensure that UK listeners are able to access the public services that are intended for them, in a range of convenient and cost-effective ways. We also must ensure that third-parties are able to meet ��tv requirements including prominence, which helps listeners to find content we’ve made for them, and sharing of data, which helps us understand what people are listening to, which in turn helps us improve our content and services. At the same time, it’s important we make sure that third-parties do not use our streams without permission in non-compliant ways, like serving advertisements around our radio services for example. As such, we will start restricting access to our radio streams. They will only be available to third parties that meet ��tv requirements.

We recently applied this change to nations and local radio stations. On 3 October 2023, this change was rolled out to all our national ��tv stations.

We notified device manufacturers, where possible, in May 2022 and have been working with them to minimise the impact to listeners.

What should I do if I lose ��tv radio on my device or app?

If using a third-party app, use ��tv Sounds instead. If you are using an internet radio device, please contact the manufacturer as it’s possible services could be made available again on your device. Unfortunately, it’s not practicable for the ��tv to grant access to devices that are no longer supported by the manufacturer. However, you might still be able to use the device by streaming live ��tv radio from the ��tv Sounds app on a smartphone or tablet (Bluetooth, Airplay or Chromecast).

We are unable to grant access to individual users and suggest you use ��tv Sounds instead.

Can I check if my device will be affected?

Unfortunately, we are unable to advise on specific devices. Please contact your manufacturer to find out if your device will be affected. If your device does not support protected HLS and DASH streaming technologies, which is how we will distribute radio streams online, please listen via ��tv Sounds, or consider adapting the device. For example, using Bluetooth to play radio from the ��tv Sounds app on your smartphone.

What about ��tv World Service?

Access to ��tv World Service will not be restricted.

The work the ��tv is undertaking is being done to ensure that the distribution of ��tv live radio streams meets the conditions of the ��tv distribution policy and in particular delivers value for audiences. We believe that accessing content through ��tv Sounds provides audiences with the best experience. It offers a convenient and cost-effective way of accessing all of the ��tv’s audio content across a wide range of devices. In addition, on ��tv Sounds we can help audiences discover other content we have made for them, as well as allowing us to provide personalisation, and offer recommendations etc.

On third party platforms and devices where ��tv Sounds is currently not available, we may be able to supply radio streams to those third parties where they are able to meet the reasonable conditions of the ��tv Distribution Policy - which are reflected in the criteria of our distribution agreement. By taking this approach, we aim to ensure that our reasonable conditions are met in a consistent way by third party carriage partners.

After the current changes have been implemented the following will apply:

a) Native playback of ��tv radio within web and mobile aggregator streaming apps will no longer be possible, however audiences will be able to access all ��tv audio content on the ��tv Sounds mobile and web applications. There may be instances of ��tv radio being accessed via aggregator apps, but playback of the radio streams will take place with the ��tv Sounds product, as per the existing Radioplayer mobile app solution.

b) Where audiences are using internet radio/connected devices that do not have ��tv Sounds available we are working with third parties to minimise disruption to audiences. We will endeavour to maintain existing integrations of ��tv radio streams where they are made available as part of a device’s native internet radio solution where that is compatible with our UK Public Service Distribution Policy conditions, and;

c) Directories and software solutions that enable individual users to directly access streams to add their connected devices will not be supported. This is for a range of reasons related to the ��tv’s obligations under the ��tv Distribution Policy, including ensuring our streams are not used in non-compliant ways.

In these instances, alternate solutions for accessing ��tv radio will remain available to audiences – the ��tv Sounds application for mobile and web will remain unchanged, and for connected internet radio devices users will be able to tether ��tv Sounds to their devices using Bluetooth, AirPlay or Chromecast. Alternatively ��tv stations will remain available on FM and DAB and, where possible, through native internet radio solutions.

Beginning in May 2022 we started communicating the changes to aggregators and device manufacturers, where we were aware they were using our streams.

Changes to the streams began on 6 September and were applied to Radio Shetland, Radio Orkney, and Radio Wales Extra. On the 19 September 2023 we rolled out this change to all other nations and local radio stations. On 26 September we changed Radio 2. On 3 October, we rolled out the change to our remaining national stations.
