±«Óãtv

Advisory

±«Óãtv R&D's Advisory Team provides independent, evidence-based advice on how technology will enable the ±«Óãtv to inform, educate and entertain for the next 100 years.

We are an internal consultancy that supports R&D and the wider ±«Óãtv to develop future service offerings, contribute to the creative industries and maintain and enhance the corporation's position on the internet.

What we're doing

Horizon scanning: Identify emerging tech trends in industry and prioritise them for deeper analysis based on the likelihood of them happening and their level of impact on the ±«Óãtv.

Trend analysis: Analyse trends, decide what they mean for the ±«Óãtv and identify new areas of research that R&D should consider to maximise opportunities and minimise risks. We produce recommendations in collaboration with our colleagues and use these recommendations as input to create an innovative research agenda and workplan.

Policy positioning: Support the ±«Óãtv’s policy and public affairs teams by helping them understand technological advancements and how these might impact the ±«Óãtv’s position within a changing regulatory and policy environment.

Standards development: Participate in the development of international standards around media, technology, and the internet in ways that support the ±«Óãtv's strategic priorities and ensure that they are aligned with our public purposes.

Engagement: Communicate our views on emerging technologies with leaders inside and outside the ±«Óãtv, and other audiences where relevant to help answer difficult questions and drive decision-making.

Our team also leads the thinking and, in some instances delivery, of key special projects:

Public Service Internet: A wide ranging programme of activity to guide the future development of the internet to deliver public value.

A research programme using provenance signals to build trust in the media sector.

We also offer strategic advice around the development of significant initiatives including R&D’s research programme around personal data stores to support new models of data stewardship.

Why it matters

The ±«Óãtv needs a strategic, forward-looking research agenda that can prepare it to take advantage of rapid technological change. There is a lot of hype about emerging technologies and it is important to establish what they mean for the ±«Óãtv. The advisory team exists to cut through the noise and establish how emerging trends will impact the ±«Óãtv and what the ±«Óãtv should be doing to capitalise on the opportunities while minimising risks.

We take a position on what emerging tech trends mean for the ±«Óãtv’s future.

The Advisory Team connects the ±«Óãtv's long-term objectives to R&D's research agenda, ensuring that R&D's position on emerging technology informs wider ±«Óãtv strategy, and ±«Óãtv strategy shapes R&D's research priorities.
