The IP Studio team recently ran the Advanced Media Workflow Association's second Incubator workshop -- this time in Salford, and with new participants. Its success led to our work on discovery and registration being proposed as the first of a series of Networked Media Open Specifications.
We had a good turnout again, with seven new participants, bringing the total to twenty across the two workshops. We didn't really have enough room in London, but this time were able to spread out across five rooms in MediaCityUK. Once again there was a great sense of collaboration and purpose at the event, with those who had been at the first workshop helping out the newcomers.
In London, everyone successfully interacted with our "registry-based" discovery system, and this was again the case in Salford. But this time we also tested "peer-to-peer" discovery that is suited for small cases such as a direct connection from a camera to a recording device; a practical solution for discovery has to scale up and down like this to gain acceptance. This second workshop also included more audio content with several participants successfully exchanging audio streams.
The discovery protocols used at the workshop have now become a Proposed Specification within AMWA's family of (NMOS). These will openly document the the higher-level specifications used within the Incubator in a way that they complement the lower-level streaming specifications being discussed, for example TR-03, the for transport of uncompressed elementary stream media over IP.
