Sometimes you enter the lab on a Friday afternoon and your team presents you with something which is just magical.

This happened to me last week and I hope I can share more details soon. For now, here is an update of our work during December last year.

ICoSOLE

Our European Project had its first official review. The data from our test shoot was released some time ago and we have now had the opportunity to demonstrate the results of our processing and developments based on this material. During the review we demonstrated an immersive audio mix of the recordings using a nine channel speaker layout with height.

We also showed how you could navigate around a concert broadcast using the concept you may have seen in the project. Based on this work we have developed the system further including a special audio rendering engine to provide you with a zoom and pan capability for high quality audio content. In other words the audio mix follows your navigation around a 4K video. This is achieved through a combination of object-based delivery of the content and audio processing in the browser to adapt the virtual sound scene to the visual perspective.

Binaural was On the Beat

The Audio Team has been invited to demonstrate our binaural work at the On the Beat Event in London. Together with our colleagues from the User Experience Team we immersed the attendees in a binaural piece of music and the magic of variable-length content. We presented the most recent version of our binaural rendering engine using low cost head tracking. All of our demo content was stored in the new based file format. More details on the event itself can be found .

Presentations and publications

There are also a couple of publications which I would like to mention here. Chris Baume presented a poster about his work which has been shared in this blog at Queen Mary University London, one of our Audio Research Partnership partners. You may also like to know that our IBC paper on Object-Based Broadcasting is available as an ±«Óãtv Whitepaper . Last but not least ±«Óãtv R&D hosted the Christmas lecture of the British Section of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) where I had the pleasure of speaking about .

Meet the team

In the next few weeks there are several opportunities to meet the Audio Team at a variety of events. Please get in touch to arrange a meeting if you like, or join one of our talks and demos at the or the .   And if you are wondering what the front picture is all about: Yes, our listening room now has a lot of connectivity and is getting its final tuning and finishing touches now.

  • Immersive and Interactive Content section

IIC section is a group of around 25 researchers, investigating ways of capturing and creating new kinds of audio-visual content, with a particular focus on immersion and interactivity.
