Fully funded PhD studentship on the Quality of Experience of 3D Audio

Published: 30 May 2014

We're looking for a researcher to undertake an industrial doctorate, working with ±«Óãtv Research and Development and Newcastle University's Culture Lab

Funded ICASE PhD Studentship - ±«Óãtv R&D and Culture Lab, Newcastle University

Quality of Experience of 3D Audio

Starts Sept/Oct 2014 for 3.5 years.  PhD fees plus enhanced stipend of c£15000 pa

Closing date: 29 June

Project:

This project will explore the user experience of 3-D audio by means of a series of experimental studies.  What characterises the Quality of Experience of 3-D audio for the different types of content made by the ±«Óãtv?  How can we measure Quality of Experience across different platforms, services and genres of programme?

This project is not concerned with researching the signal processing techniques for creating 3-D audio, but the experimental techniques for measuring the experience that listeners have.In particular, we wish to understand how quality of 3-D audio experience is a function of different programme genres.  What is a good 3-D audio experience for sport?

For music? For drama?  How does the quality of experience vary across the range of consumer audio devices, and the different 3-D audio techniques?  What is the extent and the effect of the quality mismatch between listening in the production mixing environment and listening in the domestic reproduction environment?

Person Specification:

The ideal candidate for this studentship should have a strong background in Music Technology or a similar subject, with experience in or enthusiasm for, constructing experimental studies with listeners and with a range of media technology.  Alternatively, candidates might have a strong background in broader Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Physics or Psychology, but with demonstrable experience and interest in audio production, as part of project work, or professional experience in student radio, TV or theatre. Candidates would be expected to have (by September 2014) either a 2:1 or First class honours undergraduate degree or a Masters in any of the areas highlighted above.

Goal / Deliverables:

At the end of the project, the student will have developed an effective and detailed model of the quality of experience of 3-D audio, encompassing technical and genre variables.  He or she will also have created experimental tools and techniques for studying the field and built a detailed understanding of what the quality model enables the industry to accomplish and deliver.

Key Highlights of this Studentship:

This studentship should appeal particularly to scientists and engineers who are interested in working with the creative industries, or have a particular interest in cutting edge and next generation audio technologies.  The project will be very interdisciplinary.  Audio and User Experience research are both areas of increasing importance for the ±«Óãtv, which has launched multi-university research partnerships in each field.  Culture Lab at Newcastle University is one of six collaborating partners in the ±«Óãtv User Experience Research Partnership.

How to apply:

Please apply by emailing a current CV and a covering letter describing your interest in the project to Dr Michael Evans. For further information about Newcastle please contact Dr Dave Kirk.

Funding Notes:

The project is supported by the .The grant will cover all study fees for UK nationals/residents and a stipend for 3.5 years. The stipend will be around £15000 per annum, and there will also be funding for travel to conferences and collaborative meetings. Non-UK nationals or residents are not eligible for this studentship.  Applicants should check the .
