As part of our Women in History series we take a look at female warriors. The concept of professional female gladiators is a matter of great debate - but there is quite alot of historical evidence that points to them being a facet of Rome's lethal gladitorial games, albeit an unknown one.
Felicity Finch met female gladiators Susanna Shadrake and Mandy Turner as they battled it out, practising for their next bout.
