Ìý The Horsefair Monday 2 December 2002 Ìý
There's an old Irish adage, "go east for a woman - go west for a horse" and every autumn, those with a passion for all things equine journey to Ireland's far west to Ballinasloe in County Galway.

This is the site of the Great October Fair, the oldest and biggest horse fair in Europe. Thousands of stallions, mares, foals and donkeys are bought and sold.
There are no rules, no regulations and no forms to fill in and because it's a strictly cash business, deals are struck in the time-honoured way of a nod, a wink, spit and a hand slap.
Clare Hampson joined the throng on the green hoping to catch a deal in progress.
